Poynton resident conquers Mount Kilimanjaro
Andrew Peel, Poynton resident and Everybody gym member at Poynton Leisure Centre, has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, a huge personal achievement which required Andrew to show dedication to his health and fitness week in week out.
Andrew revealed that is took him and his friends eight days to climb Mount Kilimanjaro where he saw himself loose 6kg in body weight. The group employed close to 50 locals including, porters, guides, cooks and doctors to get Andrew and his friends up the mountain and back safely.
Andrew shared:
“I was in Tanzania for 14 days in total. The trek was 8 days in total, 6 on the way up and 2 days coming down. We camped in tents at each location, trying to get enough rest between long treks from, 6am – 6.30 pm which saw the sun coming up and going down on the equator. Temperatures went from 25 degrees to 0, reaching well below at night dependent on altitude.”
Andrew continued:
“Each day you move up no more than 1000m to adjust to the altitude, walk high and sleep lower to let the body adjust. On summit day you walk 4km which is an ascent of 1200m which takes roughly 5-6 hours which seems ridiculous but it’s just an uphill slog that sees your heart rate/lungs and body put to the test.”
Andrew trained consistently for this huge challenge utilising the facilities at his local Everybody Leisure Centre in Poynton. Geoffrey Flavell, Duty Manager at Poynton leisure centre shared:
“What Andrew has done is an incredible achievement/ Climbing Kilimanjaro is something that many people dream of doing but very few actually manage. He has worked so hard with his fitness, his weight and his mind and breath by attending a variety of classes here at Poynton Leisure Centre. Not only does he deserve the huge round of applause and credit, but he certainly deserves the recognition from his peers and leisure centre. He uses our services 3/4 days a week and is a loyal customer and a great advocate for our centre.”
