By jadegriffin September 29, 2020

As the nights draw in and the darker mornings and evenings arrive, it’s easy to lose your routine and sometimes you just want to stay inside with a hot chocolate and a blanket. But, your exercise schedule can become even more important during winter, improving your immune system, your mood and so much more!

Regular exercise is known to improve your immune system and help fight off colds and flus – which are always around during the winter! Sport England shares “It’s also important to remember that being healthy and fit is an important part of helping people stave off coronavirus (Covid-19) in the first place, as well as bringing vital mental health benefits at a time when people really are struggling.” (Source: Sport England)

We all know that the winter blues are real!! A daily workout releases amazing feel good chemicals like serotonin and can support in reducing depression. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that people with mild to moderate depression take part in about 3 sessions a week, lasting about 45 minutes to 1 hour, over 10 to 14 weeks and it can drastically improve mood. Get your fresh air! Exercise is a great excuse to get out into the fresh air, and we really don’t get much of it during winter.

The NHS shares: Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant.
